Smoking, I Quit...!

Let’s talk about Bad Habits, shall we? Everybody has them, you and I have one, who am I kidding? I have many.  Some of the bad habits are well, not good but not seriously harmful, whereas there are others who have very grave implications on our health, sometimes those are addictions. And smoking is one of those, In fact, smoking is a very common habit this day and is more prevalent amongst youngsters.

Smoking can lead to a variety of harmful health effects on your body. It affects almost every part of your body, no matter how you do it. Your respiratory system, nervous system, digestive system, reproductive system. Smoking regularly can lead to cancers and other chronic diseases. According to a recent report, more than 6 million deaths occur due to smoking across the world out of which one-sixth of the deaths take place in India. It accounts for approximately 30% of all cancers in men and women and this is an alarming scenario.

Many people fall prey to smoking due to peer pressure and advertisements. And once you start smoking it feels impossible to stop. People smoke even after knowing the risks involved and harm it causes. The worst part is smoking not only harm the one smoking but also the people around him/her.Studies say that passive smoking is more harmful than active smoking.

Quitting smoking is difficult if one tries to quit "Nicotine" pulls him/her back. But with some proper guidance, remedies and will power it can be done. As we have already established that smoking falls into the category of harmful addiction, so we must find ways to quit. Here is a list of things that can help one quit smoking successfully.

 

1. Decide the date

You must set a date in your mind, on which you want to stop smoking. The specific date on the calendar maybe marked with a coloured pen or something.


2. Remain Busy

Do something, go for a walk, exercise, socialize or write. Make yourself tied down to several activities; this will help you keep your mind off the smoking.


3. Understand Triggers

One must understand the situations or the reasons responsible for the habit of smoking, knowing the triggers will make you more cautious after you have quit.


4. Remove Triggers

After understanding the triggers, one must work on systematically removing them, avoiding the smoking circle for a bit, throwing away of the packets of cigarettes and ashtray, avoiding stress may work.


5. No, just one more

There is no such thing as, the last cigarette after you have given up, taking one more cigarette will not be your last and you are simply becoming weak and giving in to your craving


6. Find Your Replacement

There are several replacements in the market, nicotine gums, drinks or you can have something more natural like water or juice or something else. Whenever you feel, you need a smoke, drink water or your favourite juice.


7. Visit Doctor

You can consult a doctor, he might prescribe some medicines or therapies, and there is acupuncture and some others.


8. Behavioural Therapy

Joining sessions or having group discussions will help you see that you are not alone with the problems, there are others and also you will deal with people who have experience in this field.


9. Be Positive

You will have to stay positive and think that you can do it, seeing yourself as a winner and not a victim will help you keep going through the process.


10. Seek help from others

You must tell your friends and family about your decision of abandoning smoking then they will help you tread through the exercise. They will give you the necessary mental support.
